with us this hour. we have barney frank later on this hour responding to the elizabeth warren/scot brown debate that happened in boston. that was a barn burner. but before that, i have to tell you we had a remarkable late in the game development in the presidential race today. it is october 1st. but what happened today is roughly the opposite of an october surprise, i guess? today the republican party announced that in five of the nine or so swing states in the presidential race this year, in the five states that you see marked with an x on this map, the republican party is stopping its voter registration efforts. the republican party has suddenly and totally as of october 1st given up on trying to register new voters in nevada, colorado, virginia, north carolina, and florida. each of those states is very much in play this year. and the republican party has announced that in these five key swing states, they are going to stop registering new voters. here are the voter registration deadlines for those states. typically what this would mean is between now and the last minute of the last ho

another massachusetts senate debate between elizabeth warren and scott brown as that race remains tight in the bay state. plus, john stewart on the media obsession with polls. we'll show that you clip a little bit later in the show. first, let's get to the news live at 5:30 a.m. here at 30 rock in new york city and in john stewart's honor we begin with polls. new numbers released just moments ago for likely voters in three critical swing states n ohio, an nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows president obama hanging on to a lead, 51-45. down in florida, it was a one point race before the debate. this morning, still a one-point lead for president obama within the margin of error. they are tied in the state of florida. in virginia is where the republican candidate is seeing some of the biggest gains. they are now in a virtual tie. romney has edged ahead of the president 48-47. that's a three point reversal from a week ago. again though, within the margin of error. they are tied in virginia as well. >>> another battleground poll out today points to a very tight race. according to "new

of the serious and sober politician as opposed to you showed the clip of scott brown and elizabeth warren, i don't think that's what's going to happen tomorrow night. >> mark, we've seen a lot of evidence so far and see more when we go through the numbers tonight in the nbc news "wall street journal" poll the final numbers when they come out how important do you think the 47% comment is? because we've seen a real shift with mitt romney trying to show his empathy. he uses the term empathy, caring, how much he cares about middle-class voters? >> we're going to see that come up as a question i'm pretty sure at the debate and you look at the polls that have come out before the nbc/"wall street journal" poll, i will not give away the stuff chuck will be reporting on tonight but in other surveys there have been damage done by the 47%. i don't think it's been fatal. a lot of the national polls have been showing a tight race with president obama around 49, 50%, mitt romney in the mid 40s or so, so mitt romney is within striking distance right now but there's no doubt that 47% comment did hurt him. >> ch

bargaining for in the badger state. but there's ools ooth surprise for the gop. elizabeth warren is ahead of scott brown in massachusetts. warren uses the 47% comment to go after brown on tax fairness. brown responds by attacking warren's native american heritage? his staffers were even caught on tape making racist gestures. brown thinks he can win the election on this issue, but it's not working. warren is ahead by five points. her fellow democrat in missouri is doing better. claire mccaskill is winning on women's issues. todd akin coined the phrase "legitimate rape." he was caught on tape saying he doesn't support fair pay for women because it hurts free enterprise? mccaskill, warren, and baldwin are focusing on women's issues, the 47% and medicare, it's working. and there are others. heidi heitkamp is in a race in north dakota. shelley berkley is neck and neck in nevada. all of these women are giving the democrats a fighting chance and taking control of the senate. i'm joined by michelle goldberg contributing writing for "newsweek" and keli goff, political correspondent for theroot.com
